A Bitter Wind
</a>
In cellar deep he worked the spell
His power fed from magic’s well
But when she saw this darkened cell
She warned “You are creating hell”

He turned her out; he locked the door
Believing in an endless store
He siphoned magic from the core
Deaf to her plea “Do not take more!”

He came to say “The spell is spun”
Gloating … ‘til he saw the sun
Black and bloated, “What have I done?”
His brag turned tail upon his tongue

She saw him then, heard his lament
As they stood upon the battlement
He called to her, “I can’t repent”
“Destruction was not my intent”

She answered back “What you have sought”
“Has caused the very air to rot”
“Your prize” she said, “Was too hard bought”
“Am I to pay; my blame is naught.”

And though he saw the consequence
He refused to make the penitence
He backed away; he’d no defense
Against her selfless acquiesce

She turned then to the bleak terrain
And pleaded to the crimson rain
“If from your vengeance you’ll refrain”
“He’ll not abuse this world again”

The cauldroned air gave its reply
An angry slash across the sky
And soon he knew she would comply
For above the storm he heard her cry

“Yes I will pay; I will adhere”
“I know the cost; your price is clear”
And then with just a single tear
She made her oath, gave up her fear

Her magic feed the brimstone air
The tempest tangled in her hair
And as he witnessed from the stair
She gave her all, her soul laid bare

Her sacrifice would set him free
But haunt him through eternity
And in his dreams she’d always be

This weaves such a powerful story. It's like an epic, really. I haven't read any good fantasy poetry in a long time, so this was quite the breath of fresh air. Well done, lovely.
